Pelicans nest successfully on Lake Skadar

Recent conservation methods ornithologists have applied in the Special Reserve Pancevo eyes in Lake Skadar National Park resulted in the increased number of Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus). Artificial nesting platforms and info-boards banning the entrance to this area were placed and Service of protection is regularly controlling the reserve. In addition, ringing of the young pelicans is done and in general efforts put in place to raise awareness of the natural heritage of the Park.

Lake Skadar is a bird haven for 280 species, many of which are endangered or threatened. The pelican, symbol of this Park is an endangered species. Although its survival was put into question over the past decade, the Public Enterprise for National Parks of Montenegro has recently implemented a number of activities in cooperation with other organizations, to increase the number of pelicans and assure their successful nesting. Pelicans breed exclusively on small islands and Lake Skadar provides favorable conditions - the large zone of macrophyte vegetation offers an abundance of food and nesting and wintering sites for them.

The ornithologists of the Public Enterprise for National Parks of Montenegro and the Natural Museum of Montenegro counted about 160 pelicans in the Park last summer – a significant increase compared to about 60 recorded last year. The count also showed an increase of young pelicans. In order to encourage the public to learn more about this species and the Park, the Public Enterprise for National Parks of Montenegro proclaimed 5 July the Pelican′s Day.
