The Geneva Environment Network and the Global Ecosystem Management Programme are delighted to announce the series of webinars that are designed to facilitate further engagement and discussion in the lead-up to a critical year for nature and society: Geneva Nature-based Solutions Dialogues.  In this one-year journey we will engage stakeholders from the Geneva International Community will discuss throughout the year the uphold value of Nature-based Solutions 

The Nature-based Solutions standard aims to create a common understanding and consensus on what constitutes a good NbS. It is intended to be a simple yet robust hands-on tool that informs the planning, design and implementation of an NbS, especially as an alternative to other types of development interventions such as hard infrastructure. To get involved with the global standard for the design and verification of Nature-based Solutions, you can take part in the first public consultation process until end of March 2019.  

In many countries, pastoralism has historically been practiced in areas that are now partitioned by international boundaries. This is a major barrier to sustainable resource management and to pastoral development. There is, however, a growing recognition of the rationale of mobility for sustainable pastoralism and there are examples from around the world of efforts to facilitate transboundary movements and transboundary ecosystem management by pastoralists. 

Most aspects of our lives are being reshaped by the huge quantities of digital data, produced and shared. Never before has data availability been so central to the future of biodiversity and human well-being on Earth. The development of high-quality land-cover maps for any location is particularly important for ecosystem monitoring and assessment, and therefore to the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems. 

Governments should invest in healthy, living soils by channelling agricultural subsidies towards sustainable farming methods. If done right, agriculture can conserve the diversity of species found in soils, helping halt land degradation and desertification. This in turn helps countries ensure future food security and to mitigate climate change, writes Jonathan Davies, Drylands Coordinator, Ecosystem Management Programme at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) ahead of World Day to Combat Desertification.
