Blue carbon and more: mangroves as superheroes

Mangrove forests and swamps are nature's superheroes, a vital ecosystem for climate mitigation, adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and many other benefits for humans and animals alike. On this International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem 2020, we present an interactive website to broaden understanding of mangroves and their role in nature-based solutions (NbS).

Coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses play a major role as carbon sinks in the fight against climate change. These ecosystems have the potential to help mitigate climate change while supporting many countries’ adaptation efforts and contributing to UN global sustainable development goals.

Yet, too often they are destroyed to make way for harmful development, or unsustainable exploitation of resources, and are excluded from future planning.

This new microsite will help you understand why these systems matter and what actions are, and still need to be taken to truly make a difference. There are also linked pages to projects from all around the world, to see Blue Carbon in action.
