IUCN at SIDS 4
In Antigua and Barbuda, the international community will gather at the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States to review Small Island Developing States’ (SIDS) sustainable development progress and propose a new decade of partnerships and solutions to supercharge their path to resilient prosperity.

SIDS are at the forefront of the triple planetary crisis and are disproportionally affected by climate change, water scarcity as well as several socioeconomic challenges. The conference therefore is a key opportunity to galvanize action for SIDS.
In Antigua and Barbuda, the IUCN delegation will include experts representing 3 different regions, and a broad range of expertise relevant to the various topics on the agenda. The participation of IUCN will strengthen relationship with SIDS Governments, members, and regional intergovernmental organisations of interest.
IUCN looks to the conference to deliver actions to support the sustainable development of SIDS, including:
- Commitment by donor agencies and multilateral development organizations to increase their support for developing and implementing nature-based approaches to reducing climate and disaster risks in vulnerable Small Island Developing States;
- New partnerships and commitments to complement innovative policies and programmes to address ocean health, conservation and management issues to reduce pollution and habitat destruction, and improve living marine resources, in light of the additional challenges of global climate change;
- Strengthening regional cooperation on climate change resilience.
Furthermore, IUCN will organise two official side-events at the conference:
- Promoting Local Solutions to GBF Target 3 - Exploring the impact of BIOPAMA funding on data collection, resilience and biodiversity conservation: The proposed side event will utilise presentations, panels, and conversations to showcase BIOPAMA’s achievements and demonstrate how local actions and partnerships are enhancing SIDS' economic diversification, building resilience and disaster recovery, and propelling sustainable development. It will also explore the strategies and actions used to bridge data gaps and enhance technological and institutional capacities to empower evidence-based policymaking. Registration via link.
- From Moroni to Antigua: SIDS4 action for ocean: This side event showcases the Great Blue Wall's integrated approach towards ambitious ocean goals, as well as mechanisms to catalyse BBNJ support, the regenerative blue economy, and ocean governance.
