  • During the COP10 the Office of the Global Senior Gender Adviser is responsible for two side events.

Side event number one - Guidelines for Mainstreaming Gender into the NBSAPs is in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD)Through this side event the CBD Technical Series Number 49 will be presented. The Guidelines are based on the fact that successful conservation policies can not neglect the wider socio-economic setting of societies. The Guidelines hope to assist the development of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to meet the objectives of biodiversity conservation and simultaneously the promotion of gender equality. They provide general guidance to Parties on the inclusion of gender considerations into their existing and forthcoming NBSAPs. The Guidelines build on the experience of the 166 NBSAPs submitted to the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) up to July 2008.

Side event number two - Linking Gender, Climate Change and Biodiversity is in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA) and the IUCN Global Senior Gender Adviser Office. This side event will present the connection between gender, climate change and biodiversity. It will bring together the voices of the women from the North and the South that had been working to ensure that the UN Convention mandate fully integrates gender equality principles. Examples of the linkages will be showcased. Some of the entry points that will be covered are Gender and REDD, Gender-sensitive adaptation strategies and the role of biodiversity as an asset to overcome disasters.

As well as the two side events, The IUCN Global Senior Gender Adviser Office organizes in cooperation with the Gender Focal Point of the SCBD a display stand during the conference to inform about the work and goals of both institutions. Recent publications (e.g. CBD Technical Series Nr 49 on Mainstreaming gender into the NBSAPs) on the “Gender Topic” will be showed and made accessible to an interested audience. The new internet information platform of the IUCN Gender office with new media will be presented under www.genderandenvironment.org .

Four representatives of four different international women groups receive funding by the IUCN Gender Office to participate at COP10 in Nagoya, Japan. The IUCN Gender Office supports these four representatives during their stay and covers the Airfares, Hotel and Per Diem (Transportation, Taxes or Visa and Food).
