Mangrove EcoSystems for Climate Change Adaptation and Livelihoods (MESCAL) Project

Under the Pacific Mangrove Initiative (PMI), the MESCAL project was developed to address key challenges to mangrove management and conservation.

The overall goal of this project is to help Pacific Islanders effectively manage their mangrove and associated coastal ecosystems to build resilience to the potential consequences of climate change and variability on coastal areas and support/enhance livelihoods.

Submerged Mangrove

The MESCAL project focuses on five Pacific Island countries (Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu) to achieve its objectives.

It is envisaged that the MESCAL project will serve as a platform for future Pacific-wide integrated coastal ecosystem management support under the Pacific Mangrove Initiative umbrella.

The project is supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety under its International Climate Protection Initiative. Project partners include University of the South Pacific (USP), Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), WorldFish Solomon Islands Pacific Base, Vanuatu Cultural Centre and Tonga Community Development Trust, as well as the Governments of the participating countries. Additional partnerships are currently being explored.
