A global goal to restore 150 million hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030, the Bonn Challenge has received widespread political support in Latin America.

The 2016 meeting was commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety of the Federal Republic of Germany and developed by the Landscape and Resource Management to Increase Carbon Reserves in Central America (REDD+ Landscape / CCAD) Program (implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH). It was hosted by the Ministry of Environment of Panama (MiAMBIENTE) and was aimed at:

  1. Promoting technical and scientific capacity oriented to REDD+ activities and other associated initiatives that contribute to sustainable development with low emission of greenhouse gases and climate change resilience.
  2. Sharing experiences in Latin America on processes for the implementation of initiatives and proposals for restoration, recovery, sustainable forest management and forest conservation that can be applied in Panama.
  3. Strengthening bilateral cooperation with the Government of Germany to undertake activities relative to the reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, increasing carbon fixing, forest conservation, and sustainable forest management (REDD+).
