After having spent much of my life working for the conservation of wetlands, I'm amazed this needed to be explained by Prof Simberloff. There is an urgent need to revisit the fundamentals tenets of biodiversity conservation - from the classroom to multilateral agreements (CBD, Ramsar, etc) - and not simply through the prism of contemporary issues (eg climate change, ecosystem services). Irrespective of the threat or management approach, the most important challenge we face is understanding and conserving the biodiversity on this planet.
