Targeted at protected area managers in Egypt, this initiative is a piece in an overall project that will help in strengthening legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks that support sustainable protected area financing, tools and practices for revenue generation and mobilization; and business planning and other tools for cost-effective management.
Economic valuations have been the talk of the decade, in proving that environmental resources within ecosystems can be finally valued and scaled. This initiative is funded by GEF, executed by UNDP and implemented by the Ministry of environment in Egypt in cooperation with IUCN ROWA.
The National Biodiversity Planning to Support the implementation of the CBD 2011-2020 Strategic Plan in Egypt (NBSAP) Project is part of the second generation of Biodiversity Enabling Activities (BD EA) under the GEF. The project addresses the country’s need to continue to fulfill its obligations under the CBD, with particular focus on the Convention’s Article 6 and the CBD COP Decision X/2. Above all, the project is a significant contribution to Egypt’s efforts towards implementing the CBD Strategic Plan 2011-2020 at the national level.
This training which occured in Cairo, Egypt in March has served as a building block towards creating a strategic vision for economic valuations for environmental resources in protected areas in Egypt. Economic valuations serve as common language used to portray environmental loss and degradation value to decision makers, helping in future environmental rehabilitation and degradation prevention. Showcasing protected area value, protected area managers will be producing 3 active cases from protected areas in Egypt, which will help in fundraising issues.
The objective of this will help provide specific technical training to the team work from the NCS on economic valuation approaches, revenue generating options from the actual beneficiaries of the ecosystem services, and cost/benefit analysis of investments in PAs. Moreover, it is important to carry out a statistical evaluation of the summary findings of the literature to get a range of potential value of underlying ecosystem benefits (a major ecosystem or two sites). At the very end, this will help produce a national strategy on resource mobilization for conservation of biodiversity in Egypt.
