More than 1200 postcards from Lebanon and Egypt

Third article of the Children as Champions of Climate Change - stories from all around the Planet series

In our previous articles we learnt about the Giant Postcard initiative and saw a beautiful example of children taking action in Nigeria for raising the attention of policy makers to the importance of climate change. CEC supports this outstanding initiative, sharing now stories from Lebanon and Egypt.

Salma Merhebi, as a country ambassador of Blue Luxury Investments in Lebanon, conducted an environmental project in her country with the support of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. Take Action for a Safer Climate – Creative Project intends to beat the Guinness World Record of the largest composed postcard with the help of children and youth.

“In 3 September 2018, I got the postcards from the Swiss Embassy in Beirut, Achrafiyeh and I started contacting schools in Tripoli, North Lebanon to start this project. Finally, Rawdat Al Fayhaa High School expressed their interest in participating in the project, so in 13 September 2018 I delivered the postcards to the school, and explained the topic and the concept of the project to the grade 4, 5, 6, and 7 students with the help of the director, responsible and teachers.

I was surprised and impressed by the help of all the school members and the creativity of the children and their awareness of the global problem. 1200 postcards were drawn and colored with solutions to the climate change.

The postcards were delivered back to the Swiss embassy to be exposed on the largest glacier of the Alps in Switzerland, to raise the voice of children and adolescents to be heard by leaders and decision makers – especially at the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that took place in Poland (COP24).”

Yara Yasser from Mansoura, Egypt, is also a country ambassador for Blue Luxury Investments which aims to achieve the SDGs. “Thanks to BLI, it was my pleasure to participate and gave the chance to my country to have a voice in such a great project to raise the voices of children and young people between the ages of 6-20 years to compel decision makers to take an immediate action to the climate change by drawing their messages on postcards. I am so excited and looking forward to the next project.”
