Reaching sustainable solutions through effective negotiation

This workshop will build capacity in dispute resolution and negotiation by providing participants with

1) a good understanding of the process and approaches to dispute resolution and negotiation, 2) an opportunity to practice some key skills for negotiating sustainable solutions and 3) insight into real-life examples illustrating various approaches, challenges and opportunities.

Achieving sustainable development and the conservation of nature requires daily negotiation at all levels of government and stakeholder interaction, from the local to the national level. Every negotiation about resource allocation and the conservation of nature needs to be done effectively to secure sustainable outcomes and respect human and environmental rights.

This Conservation Campus session will provide a full day of training on negotiation and conflict resolution skills for sustainable development, focusing on the Mutual Gains Approach to Negotiation. Insights from regional mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution will be used to strength the application of these methodologies. This approach focuses on the needs and interests of stakeholders, and expands the realm of possible solutions. It involve sa structured, confidential mediation process that is guided by an independent party; with outcomes largely dependent on the abilities of the mediator and the willingness of parties to resolve their conflict.

The workshop will include presentations and practical simulations (role plays) of multi-party negotiations in which participants can apply the principles communicated in the presentations.
