IUCN and Can Tho University’s DRAGON Institute Sign MoU

On 7 June 2023, IUCN and the Research Institute for Climate Change (DRAGON-Mekong Institute) at Can Tho University (CTU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on addressing the impacts of climate change in the Mekong Delta.

Present at the signing ceremony were Prof. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector of CTU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Van Pham Dang Tri, Director of DRAGON-Mekong Institute, Dr. Andrew Wyatt, Deputy Head, IUCN Lower Mekong Sub-region, and CTU faculty from agriculture, aquaculture, and environmental studies.

The MoU covers collaboration in the following areas:

  • Conduct research, information exchange, and capacity building on climate change and sustainable development.
  • Establish management mechanisms, policies, guidelines on sustainable development, climate change adaptation, and policy advocacy.
  • Organize international and domestic seminars, technical group meetings, aimed at expanding the network of managers, scientists, and technical experts.

The MoU not only formalizes the partnership between IUCN and DRAGON but also establishes a foundation to address the Mekong Delta’s most acute social and environmental challenges. It will promote knowledge exchange and multi-stakeholder cooperation in pursuing practical, science-based solutions to these challenges.

This activity is part of the USAID Mekong Delta Coastal Habitat Conservation Project, which focuses on climate change adaptation along the delta’s lowest lying and most vulnerable coastlines and on fisheries management in the West Sea.
