Dear IUCN Members,

As IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), we have an enormous responsibility. Since 1948, we have been the global authority keeping our finger on the pulse of biodiversity.

Rwanda is the Land of a Thousand Hills, but are these hills still healthy and productive? This is the story of how a small east African country took the unprecedented initiative to restore the functionality of lands that had lost the ability to support people and biodiversity.

This side event will look at where and how fisheries can fit in the Post-2020 GBF to meaningfully contribute to the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity. Furthermore, it will shed some initial light on the challenge of fisheries reporting against the Post-2020 Targets. 

A multiplicity of actors jointly working on restoration activities is fundamental to pave the way for a sustainable future, as said by the recently released annual report of The Restoration Initiative (TRI) for 2021.
