The Plastic Waste Free Islands (PWFI) Project, a four-year global initiative, comes to an end leaving important contributions by promoting island circular economy and demonstrating effective, quantifiable solutions to address plastic waste leakage in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

En 2019, con el apoyo de Norad, la UICN lanzó el proyecto Islas Libres de Residuos Plásticos (PWFI, por sus siglas en inglés), con el objetivo de reducir la generación de residuos plásticos y las fugas al océano en las naciones insulares de las regiones del Pacífico y el Caribe.

In 2019 with Norad support, IUCN launched the Plastic Waste Free Islands (PWFI) project, aiming to reduce plastic waste generation and leakage into the ocean in island nations in the Pacific and Caribbean regions.

Ziad Samaha tragically passed away on 22 April 2023 following a diving accident, at the age of 42. Ziad was the IUCN Marine and Coastal Zone Management Programme Manager for the Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) for nearly ten years, until June 2022.

Today we honour a dear IUCN colleague and friend - Ziad Samaha - who was a true champion for conservation in the Mediterranean.
