Several assessments have been undertaken on the extent to which countries have integrated NBS within their NDCs, often with different scopes and methodologies. This event, which was organised with the support of the Swedish Ministry of the Environment and Energy, presented some of these key assessments with the aim of exploring a future consolidation to help inform the 2018 Facilitative Dialogue, and provide common guidance to Parties on how to incorporate enhanced NBS-based measures in their next round of NDCs.

Two case studies made by IDDRI and IUCN-Med on Morocco and Tunisia were presented during this panel. Indeed, both the study, entitled 'Implementing NBS (nature-based solutions) in climate policies: What’s in it for biodiversity? First lessons from Morocco and Tunisia', which identified NBS-type actions contained in the NDCs of Morocco and Tunisia; and the policy brief, entitled 'Implementing nature-based solutions in climate policies: What’s in it for biodiversity? First lessons from Morocco and Tunisia', which provided recommendations based on examples from Morocco and Tunisia, were discussed in depth and good insight from the participants were collected in order to carry out the successful implementation of these NDCs.

Detailed presentations were also made by IIED on the extent to which ecosystem-based adaptation has been incorporated by countries within the NDCs, and by other panellists from IUCN and Climate Focus, respectively on the incorporation of Blue Carbon and Forest Landscape Restoration in the same. The Government of Mexico, which also participated in this event, shared their national experience of incorporating and implementing ecosystem-based measures within their NDC. Several other country representatives also provided valuable inputs and feedback.

It was agreed that the next step would be to explore how these different analyses could be built upon further, in order to provide a more consolidated and targeted guidance to countries in their future revision of NDCs, in relation to ecosystems/ nature-based solutions.
