Species conservation

With approximately 25% of Mediterranean known species threatened, and many other species already extinct in the region, the design and implementation of science-based strategies for species conservation and the continuous monitoring of biodiversity in the Mediterranean region have become essential.

The Mediterranean Species Programme work includes species conservation planning, building conservation capacity, and influencing economic sectors to ensure that biodiversity is well managed onto their practices.

We are focused on two main lines of work:

  • Strategies & action plans: conservation planning for particularly vulnerable species in the Mediterranean
  • Tackling threats: Conservation strategies to address species threats in the Mediterranean
