The EHF exists to promote the implementation and future development of EU biodiversity policy, with a special focus on nature conservation policy. The EHF seeks to influence policy and action through discussion, advocacy and joint initiatives with the various interests involved in achieving this goal.

The EHF objectives are:

  • Identify opportunities for the better implementation and further development of EU biodiversity policy.
  • Undertake common actions to promote a shared view to EU institutions and national governments regarding key issues relating to the implementation and future development of EU biodiversity policy where this is considered necessary and desirable. Policy integration and funding to achieve recovery of biodiversity especially related with the EU nature legislation are essential goals. In this respect, the Birds and Habitats Directive and its Natura 2000 network are one main priority.
  • Stimulate the networks of its members to undertake priority actions at the local and national level where it is appropriate.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information between members' networks in order to enhance cooperation in the field of EU biodiversity policy.

Recently EHF members met and identified key priorities for the next period (2010-2013) and working groups have been set up to tackle the following issues in depth: EU biodiversity strategy, Management of Natura 2000, Financing Natura 2000, Monitoring and Reporting, Green Infrastructure, Invasive Alien Species and the Emerald Network.

The EHF currently consists of the following members : A Rocha, BirdLife International, Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation Europe, Central and East European Working Group for the Enhancement of Biodiversity (CEEWEB), European Environment Bureau (EEB), European Natural Heritage Foundation (Euronatur), ECNC Group, Eurosite, EUROPARC Federation, Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE), Fedenatur, International Mire Conservation Group (IMCG), IUCN Regional Office for Pan-Europe (IUCN ROfE), PAN Parks, Planta Europa, Societas Europea Herpetologica (SEH) Wetlands International, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), ClientEarth, European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism (EFNCP) and Oceana.
