Agriculture projects

IUCN has a diverse and growing portfolio on agriculture projects and works on agriculture across regions.

Common ground “restoring land health for sustainable agriculture”

IUCN ’s Framework Partners provided core funding to explore the common ground between the agriculture and conservation sectors and mutually beneficial action for widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that can meet our needs for food, feed, fibre, and energy. More widely, sustainable agriculture can contribute to food, water security, climate regulation and other objectives, supporting progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and other international targets for climate change, biodiversity and land degradation.

Land Health “accelerating the global transition to sustainable agriculture”

The IKEA Foundation, Pernod Ricard, French Development Agency and IUCN have joined a partnership to help accelerate the transition to sustainable agriculture by improving land health. Intensive agriculture currently contributes to land degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change, threatening the future viability of food production as farmers depend on nature to feed the world’s growing population. The project will address the urgent need to help farmers adopt more sustainable practices.

Mainstreaming agroecological practices in restoration and conservation actions to restore land health

AFD, through the France-IUCN framework agreement, supports the implementation of IUCN agriculture and land health initiative. This proposal will leverage IUCN's strengths as a union of state and non-state actors, a reputed science-based organisation, and convenor of stakeholders in the conservation and agriculture sector to mobilise the IUCN's network and influence the public and private interventions. It will create momentum for a global consensus on agrobiodiversity in agricultural policy by promoting multi-stakeholder dialogue, strengthening global metrics to measure agrobiodiversity and encouraging its application in field projects. These actions will improve the negotiating position of the land-health-advocate community for championing land health and support agrobiodiversity-friendly initiatives at the local level.

Passionate host, respectful guests: Nurturing terroir and biodiversity

In support of the agriculture and land health initiative, Pernod-Ricard is funding a proposal to promote terroir approach and biodiversity, leveraging IUCN's strengths as a union of state and non-state actors, a reputed science-based organisation, and convenor of stakeholders in the conservation and agriculture sector to mobilise the IUCN's network and influence the public and private interventions. It will create momentum for a global consensus on agrobiodiversity in agricultural policy by promoting multi-stakeholder dialogue, strengthening global metrics to measure agrobiodiversity and encouraging its application in field projects. Smart Development of Eco-Friendly Solutions and Economic Regional Agricultural Techniques (Smart Desert)

The objective of this project is to support the development of ecologically responsible and economically accessible agricultural solutions and techniques in the highlands of Jordan in Mafraq governorate and North-East Badia.

This project, to which IUCN and Consortium will finance an additional 618,000 euros, responds to the double challenge of the economic inclusion of vulnerable population, when 16% of Jordanians and 78% of Syrian refugees live below the poverty line and the severe lack of water resources in a country where agriculture contributes 4% of GDP, 15% of employment and 75% of national water consumption.
