As part of the Early Career Specialist Group (ECSG)’s Networks and Partnerships Project, we are pleased to share with you a concise database of networks and communities of practice that may be relevant to early career environmental law professionals. Some of these are run by early career professionals themselves, and may be linked to other IUCN early career networks.

This information was collected and compiled by ECSG members based on their professional experience and information publicly available online. The database is a work in progress and will be updated regularly.

Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL)

European Society for International Law (ESIL), Environmental Law interest group

Annual ESIL conferences; research forum; Environmental Law Interest Group; mentorship programs; travel grants; awards, encouraging the study of international law, to foster inquiry, discussion, and innovation in international law, and to promote a greater understanding of the role of international law in the world today.

French Society for Environmental Law (SFDE)

Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN)

IUCN Academy of Environmental Law (IUCNAel)

IUCNAel organizes every year an annual colloquium, which provides an opportunity for early career researchers to present their research and connect to peers. It also promotes various activities in the field of environmental law research and teaching, including fellowships and grants.

Note: Membeship to the academy is open to university law departaments, law faculties, law schools, and academic research institutions (not individuals).

KFG Intlaw Research Group


Location: Germany

Fellow program for international researchers who visit the Research Group for periods of up to two years. The Research Group examines the role of international law in a changing global order.

La Ruta del Clima


Location: Costa Rica.

NGO that advocates for the right of the public to participate in climate governance processes. Work with other organizations as a climate knowledge broker. Promotes webinars and dialogues and shares publications.

Network of Climate Change Law Professionals in Latin America (LACLIMA)

Promotes workshops, training courses, and webinars, including partnership with educational institutions, think tanks, and other relevant organizations. Provides capacity building, research & development, awareness and advocacy.

Observatoire Congolais des Droits de l'Homme (OCDH)


Location: Republic of Congo

Monitoring; research; events; job opportunities; human rights; supports victims of human rights violations.

Research Action in Development and Environment (RADE)


Location: Benin

Research; study groups; conferences; contributes to the socio-economic development of local communities, solving problems related to water resources and ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate change.

Research group on Law, Environment, and Justice in the Anthropocene (JUMA)


Location: Brazil

Environmental and climate education, providing environmental and climate litigation knowledge.

Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) - Africa

Research internship opportunities and postgraduate studies at SEI York in England. Researching programs on energy climate change and sustainable urbanization.

Tarragona Environmental Law Colloquium


Location: Spain

The colloquium brings together scholars working on environmental legal issues, including world-class experts invited as panel chairs, aiming to provide a forum for junior and early-career researchers with different backgrounds to present and discuss their research and works in progress. In addition, this event seeks to create a friendly environment for meeting fellow students and colleagues who share a common interest in environmental law.

The Environmental Training Network of Latin America and the Caribbean

Environmental Education platform, exchanging knowledge and experiences on environmental education.

The Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment (GNHRE)

Research; publications; events; conferences; promotes exchange with world-leading scholars; draws insights from community-embedded experience and praxis at the interface between human rights and the environment globally.

Youth and Environment Europe (YEE)

Focuses on convening workshops, capacity-building activities and advocacy. Facilitates and supports projects and campaigns aiming to increase the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the environment and the awareness of climate issues among young people in Europe.

Youth Climate Leaders (YCL)

Works across three pillars, including education, networked climate action, and opportunities. Offers solutions to promote the employability of young professionals in the area of ​​climate and sustainability.
