IUCN statement to UN Climate Change Conference 2021

During the 10 November plenary session of the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland (COP26), IUCN Director General Dr Bruno Oberle delivered IUCN’s statement on the many ways nature can help address the climate crisis. Read the full statement below.

Global launch of the Great Blue Wall

Movement launched to conserve and restore marine and coastal biodiversity while unlocking the development of a regenerative sustainable blue economy

At the UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow, Western Indian Ocean states and partners including International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have launched the Great Blue Wall initiative to establish a network of marine and coastal conserved areas to benefit biodiversity and local livelihoods, empowering communities to become stewards of the ocean.

    The Inaugural IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC), previously scheduled for 7-12 March 2022, has been postponed to 18-23 July 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.

    A tribute to Professor E.O. Wilson


    IUCN is deeply saddened by the death of Professor E.O. Wilson – recipient of the IUCN John C. Phillips Memorial Medal in recognition of his outstanding service in international conservation. As Pellegrino University Research Professor and Emeritus in Entomology at Harvard University, Professor Wilson spoke at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2016 and was an ardent supporter of the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. Here Dr Daniel Simberloff, Gore Hunger Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Tennessee and member of the IUCN SSC Invasive Species Specialist Group, shares a remembrance of his mentor and colleague.

    Remembrances of Tom Lovejoy - the "godfather" of biodiversity


    IUCN is deeply saddened by the passing of conservation pioneer Dr Tom Lovejoy on Christmas Day 2021. Among many other roles, Dr Lovejoy served as Chair of the Board of Directors of IUCN-US and was a long-time member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC). On behalf of the IUCN family, Russell A. Mittermeier, Chair of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group and Chief Conservation Officer at Re:wild, pays tribute to his close friend and colleague.
