Gland, Switzerland, 13 July 2020 (IUCN) – The International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN, has announced the appointment of Dr Bruno Oberle as Director General, starting today. He succeeds Inger Andersen who served as Director General from 2015 to 2019 and is now Executive Director at the United Nations Environment Programme. Dr Grethel Aguilar, Director of the Regional Office for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, has been serving as Acting Director General since June 2019.
Gland, Switzerland, 9 July 2020 (IUCN) – Almost a third (31%) of all lemur species in Madagascar are now Critically Endangered – just one step away from extinction – with 98% of them threatened, according to today’s update of The IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. This update completes a revision of all African primate assessments, concluding that over half of all primate species in the rest of Africa are under threat. This update also reveals that the North Atlantic Right Whale and the European Hamster are now both Critically Endangered.
IUCN Europe is launching the report “Approaches to sustainable agriculture”, a referential document for the key approaches, concepts, and practices being considered by practitioners, researchers, and policy makers today. This report comes at a crucial time, to help with the implementation of the recently launched EU Green Deal, in particular the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies.
