IUCN at the 9th World Water Forum

The 9th World Water Forum took place in Dakar, Senegal from 21 to 26 March 2022. The Forum is organised every three years yet –like many others- the conference was delayed by a year due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The conference did maintain the traditional scheduling around World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March each year.

This year the focus of World Water Day, and the accompanying UN World Water Development Report, focused on groundwater. The report was launched on Tuesday 22 March with a special plenary at the Forum.

IUCN was present with a delegation consisting of programme and project staff from the IUCN West and Central Africa office, as well as a few staff members from headquarters. The theme of the World Water Forum was ‘Water Security for Peace and Development’. The Forum programme consisted of high-level panels, thematic sessions, side events and an exhibition area.

In the expo space, a pavilion dedicated to the theme of nature and water was established by 12 environmental organisations. The ‘Nature Hub’ - of which IUCN was a collaborating partner - held daily sessions, presentations, meetings and launches, see full programme and livestream links here: https://www.natureforwatersecurity.org.
