2010 Summer campaign "Water Sanitation, Human health, and Effective Water Consumption"

IUCN and Holcim Vietnam Limited (HVL) have a four-year agreement to strengthen biodiversity conservation in and around HVL’s sites and to support HVL’s community outreach. Every year, IUCN VN and HVL run a Summer Campaign, which is a chance to engage local people and government authorities around HVL’s five sites in southern Vietnam. In 2009, the Summer Campaign theme was waste management and environment protection. This year it was water sanitation, human health, and effective water consumption. The 2010 campaign was launched on World Environment Day on June 5 and ran for four months until the end of September. Activities took place in:

Local students had the prize-wining at the campaign

• Binh An Commune, Kien Giang Province (Hon Chong cement factory).
• Phu My Town, Tan Thanh District, Ba Ria Vung Tau Province (Thi Vai terminal).
• Thanh My Loi Ward, District 2, HCMC (Cat Lai terminal).
• Long Thoi Ward, Nha Be District, HCMC (Hiep Phuoc terminal).

About 3,000 people participated. The first activity was a 2-day-training for local authorities on water related issues and communications skills. This helped build their interest in environmental issues and organizational skills. Additional activities included developing local regulations to protect water resources, medical checks for water-related diseases, drawing and painting competitions, and water knowledge competition. In late September, closing events were held at each site to review the results of campaign and to present prizes to individuals and teams that had made the most significant contribution. These events attracted a lot of media attention. Next year the HVL Summer Campaign will focus on climate change.
