Business and Biodiversity

CBD Business and Biodiversity Forum December 2016

"Mainstreaming Biodiversity: Opportunities for Business" was the theme of the Business and Biodiversity Forum, held 2-3 December 2016, during the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cancun, Mexico.

Participants at the Forum discussed how business could contribute to -- and benefit from -- supporting the Aichi  Biodiversity Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals.

IUCN's Director General Inger Andersen was one of the keynote speakers at the Forum, who urged business to join the biodiversity preservation space.

At the close of the Forum, more than 100 companies had signed a 'Business and Biodiversity Pledge,' commiting to take concrete actions to conserve biodiversity and deliver solutions for its sustainable use, as well as ensure the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources.

During a parallel high-level segment at the conference, Ministers and heads of delegation explored how key sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and tourism, could help protect biodiversity. They agreed the Cancun Declaration, which commits them to incorporate biodiversity values into national accounting and reporting systems, improve regulatory frameworks for private sector activities, and create more incentives and tools to promote conservation and the sustainable use of biodiversity, among other actions.
