In 2010, the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10/CBD) adopted the Aichi Biodiversity Targets as part of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Target 11 calls for “at least 17 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas and 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas” to be conserved by way of “well-connected systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures” (OECMs).

The Task Force has over 100 members and honorary members from over 30 countries.

Since its inception, the Task Force has held three expert meetings (in Cambridge, Vilm and Vancouver) and presented its progress at events at the twentieth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (April 2016), the World Conservation Congress (September 2016), and the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (December 2016). The Task Force is currently supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and SwedBio.
