Investing in natural capital and the restoration of the natural functions of ecosystems offers a high return for regional economic development, human well-being and biodiversity. However, ecosystems are under increasing pressure from unsustainable use and other threats.

To address this concern, IUCN promotes the sound management of ecosystems through the wider application of the nature-based solutions approach to use ecosystems through restoration and conservation, to address global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, food and water security.

To strengthen the potential of European regions to contribute to achieving our European and international biodiversity targets, and to integrate the values of nature in societal and economic decisions, IUCN is establishing a mechanism for exchange to gather evidence on nature-based solutions, showcase actions of regions participating in this platform, as well as best practices through this online portal.
