Strategic adaptive management guidelines for effective conservation of freshwater ecosystems in and around protected areas of the world

This guide provides a framework for managing the maintenance of flow regimes and water quality to support healthy ecosystem services. The approach follows a structured path adapted for any reserve, whatever the configuration, threat or resources available. Lessons contained here should help both managers responsible for management of environmental flows, which are increasingly important for degraded river systems, and managers of free flowing rivers whose flow regimes remain largely intact.

Conservation and sustainable development: Linking practice and policy in Eastern Africa

This book presents many innovative ways used to influence policy processes, from community pressure groups to scientific discourse at the level of directors of economic planning and conservation. It analyzes experiences from a variety of conservation interventions by IUCN and other agencies in Eastern Africa, and challenges the notion of policymaking as a cyclical process. Examples are shown of how communities influence government, through direct lobbying, influencing parliamentarians, wielding of science and research, and inter-community dialogue, networking and solidarity.
