IUCN ORMACC visited the Saint Lucia National Trust

The meeting was held due to the recent visit of the Acting Regional Director to the Caribbean and made it possible to learn more about the work being done by this IUCN Member organization.

Saint Lucia, January 2020. IUCN Acting Regional Director for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean (ORMACC), Ms. Viviana Sánchez Chaves, together with ORMACC´s Regional Manager Project, Ms. María Pía Hernández Palacios, visited the Saint Lucia National Trust (SLNT) office, during a recent visit to the Caribbean due to the inception workshops of the Plastic Waste-Free Islands (PWFI) project.

The Saint Lucia National Trust is an IUCN Member in the region that focuses on conservation of natural and historical patrimony of Saint Lucia for present and future generations.  During the meeting, Mr. Bishnu Tulsie, SLNT Director, explained the main areas in which they work and the new projects, and took them to a tour through the facilities of the Pigeon Island National Landmark.

The SLNT is a membership organization established in 1975 under the Saint Lucia National Trust Act, Chapter 6.02 of the Revised Laws of Saint Lucia to conserve the natural and cultural heritage of Saint Lucia, and to promote values, which lead to national pride and love of country.

Over the years, a number of properties of significant natural, cultural or historical significance have been either vested in, or donated by individuals to the Trust for conservation purposes. The Trust’s focus to date has been on the maintenance of these sites as part of the national patrimony, and in advocating the sustainable use and management of Saint Lucia’s natural resources.

The Trust manages protected areas including National Landmarks, Historical Sites, Environmental Protection Areas and Nature Reserves, whether owned or vested in it, and provides recreational and educated opportunities within these areas.
