Project title: Integrated Approach for Education, Capacity Building and Livelihood Development of Coastal Communities in Sindh and in Baluchistan Provinces
Location: Karachi and Thatta districts (Sindh province) and Gawadar district (Baluchistan province), Pakistan
Duration: 2016 – 2017
The coastal areas of Sindh and Baluchistan are plagued by numerous problems – among them are the depletion and degradation of mangrove forests due to a lack of understanding of their economic and ecological value; sea intrusion onto agricultural land due to a reduction in freshwater flow to the Indus Delta (with subsequent effects on livelihoods); over-fishing and destructive fishing practices (such as the use of small-mesh nets); illegal wildlife trade; and a lack of basic education, health, and market access.
The aim of this project is to promote integrated coastal management in these provinces while addressing the factors that contribute to livelihood vulnerability. This will be done by imparting environmental education in schools, conserving coastal biodiversity resources, promoting eco-tourism and building capacity in coastal communities so that they can better manage their livelihood resources.
