The official launch of the Atlas – Biodiversity of the francophonie, Richness and Vulnerabilities took place at a side event organised during the 10th Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Nagoya (Japan). More than a hundred representatives from francophone countries, international organisations and the European Commission attended the launch, presided over by Fatima Dia Touré, Director of IEPF.
The event opened with a presentation content of the Atlas by Jean-Claude Jacques, of IUCN's European Union Representation Office. Julia Marton-Lefèvre, IUCN Director General, and Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the CBD, stressed the importance of continuing this work, to develop a world biodiversity atlas and an interactive digital version of the Francophonie Atlas by 2012. Diane Jean, Sous – Ministre de l’Environnement, du Développement Durable et des Parcs du Québec, highlighted the value of this work (co-funded by Québec), while Jean – Marc Sinnassamy, on behalf of GEF's Director General, voiced the will of GEF to participate in the implementation of the suggestions stated in the Atlas. Louis Léandre Ebobola Tsibah, Environment Director General of Gabon, recalled his country’s commitments to forest conservation.
