The New Zealand government has drawn up a proposal to remove areas from the legislative protection provided under Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and to survey other conservation lands with a view to possible future mining.
The Director General of IUCN and the Chairman of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) wrote to the New Zealand government on 14 April 2010 to express concern about the government’s proposal. A response was received on 18 May 2010 from the Hon. Gerry Brownlee, Minister of Energy and Resources.
The IUCN National Committee of New Zealand made a submission in response to the government proposal (the “Submission”) on 20 May 2010. It should be noted that the State Member (Department of Conservation) and State Agencies were not involved in drawing up the Submission.
IUCN is sharing these documents online in response to a request from the National Committee of New Zealand. It should be noted, however, that the views expressed by the IUCN National Committee of New Zealand in the Submission do not necessarily reflect those of IUCN.
