The Midori Prize for Biodiversity

The AEON Environmental Foundation of Japan has announced the establishment of “the Midori Prize for Biodiversity”. This prize will be implemented in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Japan Ministry of the Environment, an IUCN Member, and the United Nations University.

This unique initiative aims at recognizing individuals that have made outstanding contributions in promoting the implementation of the objectives of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

The prize marks the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the AEON Environmental Foundation and aims to contribute to the celebrations for the International Year on Biodiversity. IUCN is contributing to the initiative by publicizing it through its large expert network and by supporting applications.

The award ceremony of the Midori Prize for Biodiversity will be held during the period of the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The steering committee of the Midori Prize for Biodiversity is chaired by Mr. Takuya Okada, Chairman of the AEON Environmental Foundation. The committee also comprises a number of very distinguished individuals, including Mr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
