Antonio Oposa Jr., Filipino environmental lawyer and member of IUCN’s Commission on Environmental Law, has received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2009. The awards ceremony will take place on 31 August 2009 in Manila, Philippines.
The Ramon Magsaysay Award is often referred to as “Asia’s Nobel Prize”. “In electing Antonio Oposa Jr., to receive the 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Award, the board of trustees recognizes his pathbreaking and passionate crusade to engage Filipinos in acts of enlightened citizenship that maximize the power of law to protect and nurture the environment for themselves, their children, and generations still to come.”
