Director General meets with IUCN members in Jordan

In a warm atmosphere, IUCN Director General Julia Marton-Lefèvre has met with IUCN members in Jordan in the presence of the former Jordanian Prime Minister HE Dr. Adnan Badran and Ministry of Environment Secretary General HE Mr. Faris Al Junaidi, IUCN Regional Councilor for West Asia Eng. Mohamed Shahbaz and IUCN Jordan National Committee Chair Mr. Fadi Sharaiha.

"The members are the most powerful arm in IUCN and I think in this region the richest membership is here in Jordan not only in terms of numbers, but also the range of interest that you represent," IUCN DG said to the Jordanian members who were present during the meeting that was held in Wild Jordan Café.

"What we are carrying through the IUCN is a very noble objective, and all my colleagues in the Jordan National Committee are striving together and trying to prove a point for future cooperation at regional and national levels," said Eng. Mohamed Shahbaz, IUCN West Asia Regional Councilor.

"Jordan National Committee is known internationally for its unity and this reflects the spirit of Jordanians. We have members from the government sector represented by the Ministry of Environment and we have the NGO sector working on desert, marine, conservation and sustainable development issues," said Fadi Sharaiha, Chair of Jordan National Committee.

During the ceremony, IUCN ROWA represented by Regional Director Dr. Odeh Al-Jayyousi signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Jordan Badia Research & Development Center represented by its President Eng. Mohamed Shahbaz to develop a Decision Support Tool for the Azraq Oasis. This system will provide guidance for decision makers on the different alternatives that insure the maximum efficiency of surface and  groundwater resources. Another MOC was signed with the Arab Women Organization represted by Ms Laila Hamarneh, Director of Projects. This agreement intends to combine the efforts of both parties to implement the Empowerment Community Participation for the Azraq Restoration Project. IUCN has been implementing many activities in Azraq Oasis most of which are related to capacity building for the relevant stakeholders .

This gathering followed a meeting with IUCN ROWA staff in the new premises of the regional office. IUCN Regional Director Dr. Odeh Al-Jayyousi delivered a presentation on IUCN work and strategy in West Asia.
