Environmental Awareness Prize

In line with the IUCN mandate to help the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges, IUCN and Inwent honoured the Syrian Arab Republic for presenting the best case study on environmental awareness focusing on water scarcity. Six case studies were presented from Jordan, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine in addition to Syria. This award was part of a 5-day-training workshop entitled How to Design & Implement Public Awareness Campaigns organized by IUCN Regional Water Resources & Drylands Programme (REWARD) and Inwent Capacity Building International during May 31 – June 5, 2009 in Jordan.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of the Minister of Environment in Jordan HE Eng. Khaled Irani who highlighted the importance of awareness in solving the environmental challenges and developing the concept of environmental management.

IUCN ROWA invited the participants of the workshop to submit to this environmental awareness competition and present a case study on awareness campaigns representing their countries. Following this workshop, eight participants were selected to participate in a Regional Water Governance Conference organized by InWent in the Dead Sea, Jordan. The participants delivered a number of presentations during the conference and participated in the conference exhibition by presenting posters on water related issues from their countries. InWent launched a competition in parallel with the conference, where Yemen took the second prize for presenting a poster on IUCN ground water project in Dhamar governorate.

Twenty Eight governmental and non-organizations from Jordan, Yemen, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco participated in the workshop. The outcome of the workshop showed not only high level of cooperation between the different participants, but also intensive knowledge sharing in the domain of water awareness approaches.

Building on the Training Needs Assessment that was developed by the trainees in this workshop, another similar workshop will be conducted in Yemen before the end of the year.
This workshop was part of a series of workshops organized every year by IUCN and Inwent. Similar previous workshops were held in Syria, Morocco and Jordan.
