In light of the global financial crisis and climate change and their effects on all forms of development, IUCN emphasizes the urgent need to explore new approaching for generating local funding inspired from culture to develop new sustainable development programmes through the Waqf (trust fund) for Environment Initiative.
Under the patronage of HE Eng. Khaled Al-Irani Jordanian Minister of Environment and the Chief Islamic Justice Dr. Ahmed Helayel, IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature through its Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Environment and the Jordanian Society for Desertification Control & Badia Development is organizing a national consultation session entitled A New Vision on Waqf for Environment and Sustainable Development. This workshop will take place on April 15th 2009 at the Holiday Inn hotel in Amman –Jordan.
“There is a window of opportunity to harness the environmental Waqf as a source for enhancing local and regional funding and reinforcing social responsibility to serve the broad concept of sustainable development. This requires innovation at the legislative, institutional and financial domains.” Said Dr. Odeh Al-Jayyousi, IUCN West Asia Regional Director.
During this consultation session, IUCN will present its vision on Waqf for Environment and Sustainable Development through activating modern institutional and financial models for environmental Waqf. This will be supported by the participation of relevant stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, youth and scientific research institutions. IUCN will also explore the relationship between environmental responsibility and the Awqaf management. The Chairperson of the Arab Group for Protection of Nature Ms Razan Zuayter will present a case study on Environmental Waqf.
Participants from different sectors will contribute to this session such as financial institutions, private sector, local ministries, and researchers from various Jordanian universities. A number of NGOs will also participate in the session such as the Royal Society for Conservation of Nature (RSCN), Jordanian Society for Sustainable Development (JSSD) and the Arab Group for Protection of Nature (APN).
