Global Reporting Initiative Releases Mining & Metals Supplement for Public Comment

The Global Reporting Initiative has released the Mining and Metals Sector Supplement for public comment.

Mining in the Philippines

The Supplement has been revised from an earlier pilot version to ensure coherence with the new G3 reporting framework and to promote reporting on a range of environmental, social and economic sustainability issues. Importantly, the Supplement has elaborated GRI’s definitions of biodiversity to encourage reporting on how the mining industry affects ecological values. IUCN is concerned that there are often gaps between the “rhetoric” of policy statements of mining companies and the “reality” of delivering quality projects on the ground – where impacts happen. Likewise, there is a diversity of performance in the industry as a whole – with some companies making real strides to achieve better standards, while others lag behind. Good reporting frameworks can help driving better performance within a company and throughout the industry as a whole.
