Inspiring stories from South America’s protected areas

A competition ‘Inspirational Stories from Protected Areas”, organised by IUCN to share conservation experience in South America has generated a wealth of moving and compelling videos.

Concurso video "Historias inspiradoras de áreas protegidas"

The initiative was motivated by the need to discover inspirational stories about the management and ownership of the region’s protected areas - its national parks, nature reserves, and many others - and the contribution they make to human well-being.

The contest, launched in April, attracted 30 videos from all over the region - Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay and Bolivia. The filmmakers shared, in a four-minute multimedia space, a meaningful story filmed in their country’s protected areas.

Stories emerged that were both compelling and awareness raising about the importance of protected areas in different ecoregions.

Of all the videos submitted, 10 selected by the jury will be shown at the IUCN World Parks Congress taking place in Sydney, Australia, 12 to 19 November.

The first three places will receive a monetary prize, and the overall winner will receive further financial support for an exchange experience in a protected area outside their country of origin.

It is hoped that the video contest will be a source of inspiration and motivation for the conservation of biodiversity by local communities, organisations and the general public who all benefit from healthy, well-conserved ecosystems.

The competition results will be announced on 20 October 2014.
