Protected Areas Governance and Management E-book newsletter

At the September 2012 IUCN World Parks Congress in Jeju, South Korea, the World Commission on Protected Areas announced its intention to prepare a new compendium text book for students and policy makers titled Protected Area Governance and Management. This book will be the principal source of information for WCPA to underpin its professionalization of protected area management and capacity building curricula, and will serve as a founding text for PA governance and management worldwide. The first information newsletter on the book’s development is available now.

The new book is planned to be launched as an IUCN “Legacy Product” at the November 2014 Sydney IUCN World Parks Congress. WCPA aims to produce it as a highly accessible e-book in English, Spanish and French. Printed versions are also planned. It will replace the current compendium text developed by IUCN, the 2006 Managing Protected Areas, A Global Guide edited by Mike Lockwood, Graeme Worboys and Ashish Kothari.

The same editors are preparing this new book. It will comprise 31 Chapters, with each chapter being a self-contained module as well as being an integrated part of the larger book. Experienced IUCN WCPA and other protected area management authors are being invited to contribute to this volunteer project. The project has been described in detail in the first newsletter, including the timetable. The book, once produced, will be an investment in the professional park manager staff of the future and consequently, the effective management of protected areas and the conservation of biodiversity and other heritage. The Plan for the Book, including an outline of its contents, has been posted on the website, as has a guidance statement for authors to assist contributors.
