IUCN-ELC at the 6th World Water Forum: Launch of the publication Governance of Shared Waters: Legal and Institutional Issues

Marseille, 16 March 2012. On the occasion of the 6th World Water Forum, the IUCN Environmental Law Centre launched the book “Governance of Shared Waters: Legal and Institutional Aspects” (Grethel Aguilar Rojas and Alejandro Iza (2011). Governance of Shared Waters. Legal and Institutional Issues. Gland, Switzerland: IUCN.).

Alejandro Iza and Alice Aureli

This publication promotes the idea that water should be a vehicle of integration rather than a source of conflict. It clarifies normative and institutional aspects of transboundary water management in order to strengthen stakeholders’ capacity. It is the English and updated version of the well known “Gobernanza de Aguas Compartidas. Aspectos Jurídicos e Institucionales”, originally released in 2009.

The launch was graced by a distinguished contribution from Dr. Alice Aureli (Chief of the Section on Groundwater System, UNESCO - International Hydrological Programme). She highlighted the importance of appropriately protecting and preserving ground and surface water resources, the need to consider their hydrological interlinks and manage them in an integrated way. Law and institutions play a fundamental role in ensuring the sustainable development and sound management of freshwater, especially in transboundary contexts.
