Report on a Survey of CEC Members

More than 200 CEC members participated in this survey to shape the Commission's programme for 2013-2016. CEC Chair Keith Wheeler shares the report prepared by CEC Deputy Chair Wendy Goldstein and Richard Horsfield of Macquarie University.

Commission on Education and Communication

Dear CEC members,

I would like to thank the over 200 CEC members who responded to the recent CEC Survey. The thoughts and input that you provided were very helpful in developing a situation analysis and guiding the thinking of the Steering Committee in its programme planning meeting in mid-October.

Many appreciated the opportunity to make input to the programme through the survey and called on us to make better use of the network's expertise.  We value the energy amongst you to "be the change" and catalyse action by bringing together stakeholders at local to national level to act for biodiversity conservation or sustainability and or share knowledge.

In our next programme (2013-2016) the Steering Committee agreed that the Commission will continue to offer expertise to IUCN in learning, strategic communication and change and knowledge management in the next programme period. The CEC programme will focus in the following four programme areas:

  1. towards target one of the Convention on Biological Diversity, to develop awareness and action for biological diversity;
  2. bringing about change so that attention to ecosytem functions occurs in the food, energy and water security decision making;
  3. providing capacity and knowledge resources to assist the IUCN networks to better integrate and use effective approaches to bring about individual, social and organizational change, and to market these services;
  4. provide a means for the CEC network to share expereince and develop the capacity of its network.

There will be more news of the Steering Committee meeting shortly and the draft CEC programme will be made available soon.

Best wishes and thanks again.

Keith Wheeler, CEC Chair
