Survey results: CEC members want website rich in learning links

What do CEC members want from their website? Knowledge of current trends in sustainable development communication and education is “very important” as is professional updating. A  survey in December 2009 identified member priorities.

CEC conducted a quick Web survey December 18 to 24 among all CEC members, seeking input for a meeting January 8 to make new and exciting plans for the Commission’s website, now in transition from the former portal to the main IUCN website. Frits Hesselink and Andy Alm prepared the questionnaire and the attached report on results.

Profile of respondents

CEC received 126 responses out of a possible 606 – or about 20 percent of the total CEC membership. Male respondents outnumber female 3 to 2. Most respondents work in a national NGO, university or institute of higher education. Most respondents live in Asia and Europe, and the geographical spread was in line with the general membership.

Research and advice, training and professional updating are the core focus areas of most of the organizations where the respondents work. Nearly every project listed by respondents would be an interesting topic for a story or case study on the CEC website.

Web searches, websites and online social networks appear to be assigned more importance than radio or television and perhaps even print publications

What do members want on the CEC website? Links to key publications, links to expertise among CEC members and links to key triangle/e-learning resources, and also a calendar


Advice on the website was offered by 92 respondents, including the following suggestions:

  • Issue it Arabic
  • Keep the short headline front page with option to read more
  • Publish details of CEC members with profiles
  • Be more interactive, e.g. allow members to communicate with each other, develop joint papers or organize meetings
  • Focus on learning
  • Ask people what their favourite websites are, and do better
  • Carry stories on CEC action in different regions and countries
  • Update immediately
  •  Add new publications
  • Add more information on training opportunities, esp. by scientists in developing countries
  • Add more stories about CEC members and their work


A response rate over 20 percent at this time of year, with such a short timeframe, suggests that the outcomes are representative for the total current CEC network, according to Frits Hesselink. He also finds that the results confirm the concepts of WCLN and WCI, which focus on learning and professional updating. The website has the potential to be a major driver for the CEC network, serving both as a means to integrate membership management and as a learning hub.
