Marine Protected Areas Management Planning Workshop series in Syria

Management planning is considered an essential step towards ensuring proper management of protected areas. Responding to the Syrian Ministry of Environment request, IUCN Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) in partnership with the Ministry has conducted a series of workshops on Marine Protected Areas Management and Planning for relevant stakeholders in Syria.

The first workshop was conducted in Lattakia on February 28-March 4, 2009 and the second workshop took place in Damascus on April 28-May 2, 2009. Another workshop is scheduled to take place in Lattakia in October 2009.

This training aims to provide Syrian experts with capacity building skills focusing on different components in marine protected areas management. This will enables them to play an active role in the planning and management processes for MPAs in their country. As part of the training requirements, the participants visited the Fanar Ibn Hani marine protected areas in Syria and used it as a case study for building their management plan.

The series of workshops are funded by Hans Seidel Foundation and the Regional Activity Center for Special Protected Areas (RACSPA).
