The formal ceremony included a bilateral meeting in which IUCN commended the progress made in the multilateral system and environmental governance in recent years. During this meeting, IUCN underscored its ongoing work in preparation for the September Summit of the Future, and praised the Secretary General for kickstarting this process to revive the multilateral system and provide momentum for decisive action on the most significant challenges of our time. In IUCN’s view, the Pact for the Future, the main outcome of the summit, should include a clear commitment to a fossil-free and nature-positive future.

With its longstanding expertise and the strength of its unique membership, IUCN is perfectly placed to advocate for science-based policy within the UN system and beyond.

Acting as the voice of nature, IUCN’s diplomatic efforts in New York will be key to ensure that the environment continues to be at the heart of decision-making at the highest levels.
