Global Green Growth Forum June 2016

Government and business leaders explore how to scale-up their response to global challenges

Copenhagen, Denmark, 6 June 2016 -- Under the theme "A Call to Action - Enabling Solutions at Speed and Scale," IUCN Director General Inger Andersen joined Danish Prime Minister, HE Mr Lars Løkke Rasmussen, government ministers and business leaders at this year's Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) from 6-7 June in Copenhagen, where they called for collaborative action to achieve the world's 2030 Agenda.

As part of a high-level panel that explored how public and private sector action can help deliver the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement on climate, Ms Andersen acknowledged the key role of partnerships, including with business, for transitioning to a more sustainable, low-carbon future.

"Without business participation, sustainable development and green growth efforts will never get off the ground,” she said. “However, fundamental changes are required. Actions must be informed by a longer-term view and this includes broadening the current definition of ‘return on investment’ used today.”

Ms Andersen also participated in a session hosted by the 2030 Water Resources Group, of which IUCN is one of the newest members, and she was asked to join the 3GF Advisory Board.

In other sessions, IUCN's Global Business and Biodiversity Programme Director Gerard Bos showcased IUCN's Sustainability and Inclusion Strategy for Growth Corridors in Africa (SUSTAIN-Africa) project; and, explained IUCN’s role in the development of the Natural Capital Coalition's new Natural Capital Protocol for business. Both projects demonstrate how engaging business can directly contribute to the global goals for sustainable development and climate.

The 3GF convenes governments, businesses, investors and international organisations to act together for inclusive green growth. It was initiated by the Danish Government in 2011, in collaboration with the Republic of Korea and Mexico. For more information, please visit the website.
