The well-being of people all over the world depends on the various goods and services provided by ecosystems, including food, fuel, construction materials, clean water and air, and protection from natural hazards. Ecosystems, however, are under increasing pressure from unsustainable use and other threats including outright conversion.

To address this concern, IUCN, together with partners, promotes the sound management of ecosystems through the wider application of the ‘Ecosystem Approach’ – a strategy for the integrated management of land, water and living resources that places human needs at its centre.

Resilient nature is fundamental to societal and economic resilience. Nature-based solutions allow society to address a wide range of global development challenges.

During the event, which will take place on 27 November 2013 from 9:15 to 10:30, room Lab 2, the following speakers will showcase different examples of nature-based solutions.

  • François Wakenhut , Head of Unit Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, DG Environment B2, European Commission (replaced by Julie Raynal, Unit Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, DG Environment B2, European Commission)
  • Thierry Dudermel, Head of Sector Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, DG Development and Cooperation C2, European Commission
  • Harald Lossack, Head of Competence Center on Biodiversity, Forests and Natural Resources, German International Cooperation
  • Pedro Rosabal Gonzales, Deputy Director, Global Protected Areas Programme, IUCN
  • Gretchen Walters, Programme Officer, Global Forest and Climate Change Programme, IUCN

The event will be moderated by Luc Bas, Director of the IUCN European Union Representative Office.

The theme of the 2013 European Development Days which will take place on on 26-27 November 2013 is "A decent life for all by 2030 - Building a consensus for a new development agenda".
