Protected Areas for Nature and People

With its new protected areas programme WWF Adria strives for sustainable use of natural resources in the Dinaric Arc region as a foundation for the socio-economic development. It's about nature and people. One without another, according to WWF, can't exist. So the newest protected areas programme in WWF Adria is named simply “Protected Areas for Nature and People” (PA4NP).

The 4-year programme funded by Sida is a laying foundation for the engagement of local communities in the management of protected areas. It will introduce examples of how protected areas can generate social and economic benefits in cooperation with the local community. These examples will be taken from the field work of WWF Adria and their partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina (NP Una and NP Sutjeska), Kosovo (PA Germia), Montenegro (NP Biogradska Gora) and Serbia (NP Fruška Gora, SNR Gornje Podunavlje, NP Djerdap, NP Tara and PL Avala). Each field project will bring new experience; from new tourism product and new business potentials to education and bear monitoring and watching.

The other part of programme is focused on building a strong constituency for influencing and monitoring environmental national policies. The programme team will work on advocacy together with CSO partners from 8 countries of the Dinaric Arc to engage with key decision makers and influencers.

WWF will work with the Parks Dinarides network to improve cooperation between the protected areas and the local community in the entire region, and measure their community outreach. An important component of the programme is respecting and ensuring fundamental human rights, especially in accordance with the principles: right to information, inclusion of all social groups, non-discrimination and equality as well as respect for the principle of responsibility and transparency.

The project team just met in late September in Grude, BiH, for the first programme anniversary, to define new work plans.
