From the 12th to 17th of March, IUCN was present at the World Water Forum, held in Marseille, France.
After six days of debates, exchanges and roundtables, the participants announced more than a hundred commitments.
The importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of the solution to the global water crisis was recognized. In a ministerial declaration, the UN Rio Summit on Sustainable Development was asked to catalyze action on providing the poor with access to clean water and sanitation as well as addressing the issues of water scarcity and pollution.
There was also attention for disasters involving water, where IUCN promoted disaster risk reduction through improved ecosystem management.
