Karachi: February 02, 2011 The World Wetlands Day was jointly celebrated by Balochistan Partnerships for Sustainable Development (BPSD) of IUCN Pakistan, Lasbela District Government, Lasbela Civil Society Network (LCSN), Balochistan Mahigeer Itehad(BMI), Sonmiani Development Organization (SDO), Coastal Organization CARD, Society for Conservation Dam (SSDCN), Sahil Welfare Organization-Gadani and the Media. The event was organized at Sonmiani Lasbela, which is one of the 19 wetlands and Ramsar sites in Pakistan.
Three events were organized which included: a Walk, Plantation of Mangroves and a Seminar. The walk started from Ecotourism Centre upto a mangrove site where the participants planted mangrove saplings and it concluded back at the Ecotourism Centre.
Representative of the Balochistan Mahigeer Itehad also spoke on this occasion. Balochistan Mahigeer Ittehad represents the fishermen community along the Balochistan coast. He said that this is the first time in the history of Lasbela that they have observed the World Wetlands Day, allowing them to learn more about the importance of wetlands. The participants resolved that next year they will make special efforts for highlighting the significance of this day as their livelihoods are dependent on the survival of wetlands.
Speaking on the occasion representative of the Forest Department said that trees are important for keeping the wetlands healthy and the department is working on improving vegetation along the coast. Mr. Nadeem Mirbahar, Coordinator BPSD, Lasbela District also spoke on this occasion. He said that IUCN is working for the restoration of ecological system along the Balochistan coast, so that livelihood resources of the communities could be improved.
