World Forestry Day celebrated in Karachi

IUCN Pakistan organised a programme on the World Forestry Day, for enhancing understanding, interest and support of a diverse group, ranging from school children to college students, media and financial sector. The programme included: an exposure visit to Korangi Fish Harbor, mangrove plantation by the participants, screening of documentary on community based forest management and discussions with IUCN natural resource management experts, at IUCN Country Office.

While briefing the audience on the topic, Mr. Tahir Qureshi said that forests harvest wildlife, flora and fauna. He further added that no mangroves on shore translates to no fish in the sea. Mr. Qureshi stressed on collective effort for an afforestation campaign and advised for learning from the experiences of other countries on joint forest management. Mr. Rafi-ul-Haq of IUCN elaborated on the species status and the need for environmental reform through a participatory approach.
